St David’s Day Loud Welsh Playlist

In honour of the great land that is Wales on this, St David’s Day, here’s a little list of some awesome loud things that have been spawned left of the Severn. Obviously there’s the usual suspects who won’t feature here because either I don’t care about them, they’re not very good, or their lead singer is in prison for child abuse. So that rules out … Continue reading St David’s Day Loud Welsh Playlist

‘Rabid’ to get Soska Sister Remake

News of the average horror remake is often met with horror itself, or frequently, at best, apathy. But that’s the average remake. When it comes to David Cronenberg’s 1977 flick ‘Rabid’ it’s hard to imagine a better pairing than indie tour-de-force, The Soska Sisters.

In fact, it’s hard to recall a time where the horror community has met a remake with such furious applause.

It’s hardly surprising, considering the potential in Cronenberg’s underrated body horror for modernisation, combined with Jen and Sylvia Soska’s talent for visually stunning cinema, intense gore and effects, and uncompromising stories.

To fully appreciate the driving power behind Running’s ‘We Never close’ it really needs to be experienced as part of the album’s full and intense package. Track of the Week #12 – Tigress ‘Lost’

for some reason the other night I decided it’d be a real good idea to have coffee around midnight. Luckily it meant I stayed up listening to Maximum Rocknroll Radio – great show if you’ve not heard its – where they spun this tune. Through the foggy, coffee haze, this song jumped out at me so I had to look it up.

After trawling through the internet I can’t find much about Tigress, other than the fact they have a bandcamp.

10 Things Horror Films Should Give Up For Lent

It’s Ash Wednesday and lent has officially commenced. Brace yourselves as your social media feeds become flooded with posts about how hard life is without chocolate, alcohol, puppies, crack or whatever it is various individuals have decided to give up.

After all, people need something to post about for the next month now that dry January is over.

One year I actually lented (is that the term?). It was horrible. It was a full on relentless lenting. I gave up crisps (chips, to those in the US). Fucking love crisps. Never forgiven lent for that.

Anyway, some people could really do with observing a good old lent. Horror movies for a start. I’m not saying they need to cut back on carbs or stop having a pint at the weekend, that’d be absurd – they’re not sentient entities and have no mouths. But there’s definitely a few things I think we’d all appreciate them giving up.

Track of the Week #11 – Naðra (Nadra) ‘Fjallið’

The shitty weather makes it a lot easier to put on moody, intense black metal while you still waiting for your train in the morning.

There was a day last year, somewhere around the zenith of summer where it was unrealistically hot for London and I tried to listen to Electric Wizard’s ‘Black Mass’ (admittedly not black metal, but we’re talking atmosphere here). The sky was bluer than a Disney genie and it was hot enough cook a quick fish finger sandwich on the pavement. Everything about the experience felt wrong.

But as I say, the sun’s gone away for a bit now. So out comes the dark, moody, visceral music. Something Naðra (Nadra) are pretty incredible at.
